Wrocław University of Science and Technology is hosting two parallel, three-day in-person Widening Training workshops in Poland. Designed to strengthen the doctoral ecosystem across Unite! and partner institutions, these workshops bring together emerging researchers and academic mentors to build vital skills, share best practices, and foster lasting collaborative networks.
Workshop 1: Onboarding Early-Stage Researchers Tailored specifically for PhD candidates and early-career researchers, this workshop addresses the core question of how to successfully navigate an academic research career.
Participants will gain:
- A clear roadmap for starting your PhD journey — from defining your research question and building a supervision team to setting realistic milestones and avoiding common pitfalls in the first years.
- Tools to plan your academic and professional career — including personal development planning, competency mapping, and strategies for balancing research, teaching, and life beyond academia.
- Methods to discover your resources and strengths — through guided self-reflection exercises, peer feedback sessions, and frameworks for identifying your unique value as a researcher

Workshop 2: Training Supervisors for PhD Collaborations is tailored for supervisors at any stage of their career. This track focuses on guiding doctoral candidates effectively through the research process while elevating supervisory practices.
Participants will gain:
- Strategies for onboarding new PhD students — setting clear expectations, co-creating individual development plans, and establishing productive supervisory relationships from day one.
- Techniques for giving constructive feedback — on drafts, presentations, and research progress, while promoting autonomy and critical thinking.
- Insights into career development mentoring — helping researchers identify transferable skills, explore diverse career pathways (academic and non-academic), and build professional networks.
- Peer exchange across Unite! universities — sharing best practices, discussing common supervisory dilemmas, and building a community of practice among experienced and emerging mentors.
