Tri-City Hackathon – Biotechnology & Health Innovation for Healthier, More Liveable and Resilient Cities:

Lisbon  – ULisboa | Barcelona -UPC | Wroclaw – WroclawTech

Cities today face increasingly complex and interconnected challenges at the intersection of climate transition, health, environment, mobility, social cohesion and quality of life. Climate pressures are increasingly affecting citizens’ wellbeing, with infrastructure not conceived to be resilient to climate transition, and while the largest shares of the emissions come from the private uses such as personal car mobility and housing heating. These challenges are particularly relevant for intermediate cities, which need solutions that are innovative and scientifically grounded, while remaining affordable, scalable and adapted to local contexts and resources.

The Tri-City Hackathon: Building Cities for Health, Comfort & a Low-Carbon Future responds to these challenges by creating a space for experimentation, collaboration and applied innovation. It explores how biotechnology, life sciences, health innovation, digital technologies, engineering and citizen-centred approaches can help transform the low-carbon transition into an opportunity to create cities that are healthier, more comfortable and more resilient. From biosensors and diagnostics to biomaterials, nutrition, environmental biotechnology and digital health, the Hackathon invites participants to develop practical solutions that connect human health, environmental health and the future of urban living.

This hackathon is a two-day, international innovation challenge under UNITE! Widening project, and is organised by:

  • Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa)
  • Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTECH (UPC)
  • Wrocław University of Science and Technology (WroclawTech)

This 48-hour hybrid innovation will take place on November 21-22 and will bring together students, researchers, professionals and engaged citizens to rethink public infrastructures and technology uses as a living, shared and regenerative commons, to design and prototype solutions that advance more sustainable, inclusive, and human-comfort decarbonised cities.

It combines seamlessly key actors from the quadruple helix, namely: Academia (ULisboa, UPC and WroclawTech), municipalities (Viladecans-Ofinina del Futur), society (individuals participating) and business ecosystem (Entrepreneurship offices and entities of Can Calderón, Lispolis and ARAW).

Why Participate?

  • Go international: Work in a unique hybrid environment connecting students from ULisboa (Lisbon), UPC (Barcelona) and WroclawTech (Wrocław).
  • Make real-world impact: Collaborate directly with “Problem Framers”—experts who are looking for real solutions to implement.
  • Access multidisciplinary networks: Rub shoulders with researchers, architects, coders, and urban planners from across Europe.
  • Accelerate your skills: Sharpen your skills in rapid prototyping, data-informed design, and high-stakes pitching

Event Theme - Urban Space as Enabling Infrastructure:

Defining Health and Biotech solutions to help decarbonise and/or mitigate climate challenges threats

What if streets, squares, and transit spaces functioned as mechanisms for helping decarbonisation and enabling healthy living and ageing rather than being sterile, car-dominated corridors?

This theme encourages a creative fusion of health technology and biotech to tackle challenges posed to the municipalities in their mission to offer better standards of living.

Example Problem Statements:  (just for clarification, teams are free to define their own problem statements)

  • As the climate transitions to a warmer and more extreme weathers, tree leaves fell down more abundantly and streets are more difficult to be cleaned. Also, food in the containers root earlier, posing under stress the municipality cleaning services and creating situations for the emergency of insect pests. What health/biotech solution could help mitigating these problems and decrease the municipalities’ burden?
  • A big share of the carbon emissions come from personal car mobility, that not only pollutes but also consume abundant public spaces. Is the problem what consumers are used to? Has it to be with the design of the supplies and citizens’ requirements? What agro/food/supply chain solution could help mitigating these problems?
  • Many carbon emissions are generated in-house, causing conurbations to be less healthier spaces than countryside small villages. What domestic solutions could help converting emitting housing appliances into net-zero or carbon-capturing agents for healthier living?

Cross-Cutting Design Principles:

Across all themes, we invite solutions that:

  • Ideate how to leverage health and biotech technologies to improve the citizen’s quality of life.
  • Help municipalities with limited resources to be able to provide better-directed actions and urban services .
  • Rethink km. 0 actions: changing the ways of living to life better
  • Create adaptable and temporary interventions that respond to changing needs across days, seasons, and crises.
  • Challenge car-centric and consumption-centric norms through demonstrations and alternative visions.
  • Define solutions that could be scaled up to business models
