In the heart of Europe’s decision-making hub, Brussels, the Unite!Widening project is set to host a landmark event: “From Widening to Transformation: European Universities as Engines of Inclusion and Innovation.” Taking place on 17–18 June 2026 at the NCBR Centre in Brussels, this conference represents more than a meeting of minds—it is a strategic call to action for the future of European science and education.

The upcoming high-level conference in Brussels marks a pivotal moment for the European Research Area (ERA), as academic leaders and policymakers gather to redefine the role of university alliances in driving regional and continental innovation.

Moving Beyond the Gap

For years, “Widening” has served as the dominant approach to tackling disparities in research excellence across Europe. But as the European Research Area continues to mature, a more ambitious vision is taking shape. This conference looks beyond simply closing gaps and instead champions comprehensive institutional transformation. By harnessing the collective strength of European University Alliances, it will examine how universities across the continent can evolve into dynamic drivers of innovation, resilience, and socio-economic growth.

A Platform for Strategic Dialogue

The two-day program features a sophisticated lineup of “architects” of European policy, including representatives from DG R&I, DG EAC, and DG Energy, alongside rectors from leading technical universities and heads of major associations like EUA and CESAER.

The discussions will pivot around three core pillars:

  1. Institutional Evolution: Modernizing university governance for a transnational era.
  2. Capacity Building: Practical roadmaps for harmonizing research potential across diverse regions.
  3. Policy Alignment: Synchronizing academic excellence with the European Commission’s long-term industrial and social priorities.
A Message from the Coordinator

At the heart of this initiative is the belief that a stronger Europe requires the full participation of all its members. Prof. Fátima Montemor, Unite!Widening Project Coordinator, emphasizes the unique nature of this gathering:

“Bringing together top decision-makers and thought leaders, this Brussels high-level conference offers a unique platform to advance research and innovation and unlock opportunities for widening countries. It will unite senior figures from academia, EU institutions, government, and industry to shape more inclusive, transformative strategies, influence policy, and strengthen partnerships that empower universities across Europe to develop their research and innovation ecosystems.”

Why This Matters for the Unite!Widening Project

As an integral part of the Unite!Widening project, this conference showcases how specific interventions in countries like Poland and Portugal are providing blueprints for the rest of Europe. By showcasing real-world successes and “lessons from the field,” the project demonstrates that geographic inclusivity is not just a policy goal—it is a competitive advantage for the entire Union.
